About UPJS

At present the University has five faculties. Two faculties from five are available to study in English languge, such as: Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Science. They  prepare physicians and dentists, experts in natural sciences. The graduates of our University which is the second oldest in Slovakia, have a very good reputation all over the world.

The key mission of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice is to provide higher education based on the newest scientific findings in a wide international context, following the European trends and goals laid down in the Bologna Declaration and other documents. Developing a harmonious personality by its knowledge improvement, wisdom and creativity rise in a person, the University fulfills its mission.

Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice belongs to accomplished institutions of education and science not only in Slovakia but also in Europe.

Education and Subjects:

Faculty of medicine

The Faculty of Medicine provides university study for international students in two medical branches:
General Medicine – the course lasts 6 years (12 terms), graduates  are awarded the academic title:

  •  „Doctor of General Medicine“ (equivalent to M.D. degree)

Dental Medicine – the course lasts 6 years (12 terms), graduates  are awarded the academic title:

  •  “Doctor of Dental Medicine” (equivalent to D.M.D.).

The study is completed by the state examinations before the Board of the Faculty Experts.

Faculty of science

The Faculty offers the following degree studies:

  1. Bachelor’s study is provided in Biology, General Ecology, Geography, Physics, Informatics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The study takes 3 years. After the successfully completed bachelor exam the student obtains the degree of „Bachelor“.
  2. Magister’s study (equivalent to Master’s study) is provided 21 different study programs. The study takes 2 years. It is finished with a state final exam and the submission of a thesis. Graduates obtain the degree of „Magister“.
  3. Doctoral study’s (PhD.) ambition is to provide a stream of specialized and highly trained researchers able to undertake basic as well as applied research and development. Study takes generally from 4 to 5 years. Graduates obtain the degree of „Philosophiae doctor- PhD“.
